Stone Pier Summer Concert Series Announces Impressive 2017 Lineup

Cody Canada and The Departed to Headline Four-Show Schedule

LAKE VIEW, IOWA – With the return of warm weather comes the Stone Pier Summer Concert Series, Lake View’s free outdoor concert series situated beside beautiful Black Hawk Lake. In its sixth season, the Series will continue to offer an unrivaled ambience, pairing a breathtaking setting with respected acts from around the country representing a range of musical genres.

The most prominent act coming to the Stone Pier stage this summer is Cody Canada & The Departed on Saturday, July 2. Cody Canada was the lead singer/songwriter of the Oklahoma-based alt-country/southern rock band Cross Canadian Ragweed from their inception in 1998 to their dissolution in 2010. In that time, they sold over a million albums and consistently played to sell-out crowds becoming one of the premiere red dirt country bands of their era.

Canada formed his new band, The Departed, in 2010 and has since released three albums that have all peaked in country’s Top 20. Their recent music returns to Ragweed’s roots in the red dirt of Oklahoma, where Canada told Rolling Stone magazine his heart is, gaining inspiration from Texas where he has lived for 13 years. While seizing the opportunity to take the lead of his new four-piece band, Canada has also developed a rejuvenated appreciation for Ragweed’s legendary body of work and the connections it made with fans.

Radio Birds from Atlanta, Ga. will open the July 2 show. They call their sound simple: plain-old rock and roll music with a distinctly hairy touch. It is what you get when four guys all write music with the basic belief that it must be played live and it must be played everywhere. Each of their songs is different from the others and is balanced by the web of harmonies that entangles the whole group. Everybody sings, and sometimes, you just can’t help but sing along.

Crowds will be treated to a performance by Ras Badjao & The Tarakis in the first show of the season slated for Saturday, June 4. The band calls Des Moines, Iowa home and is a living testament to the international influence of Roots Reggae Music. Badjao hails from the Province of Kalinga of the Philippines and before moving to the states, he had the privilege to open for Ziggy Marley and headline smaller festivals with his band, Badjao Roots.

The Tarakis is a collective of musicians who have come around Ras Badjao to support reggae music in Iowa and features artists from the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Chile, as well as Lake View native Anne (Wetzstein) Stein. The evening will begin with music from singer/songwriter Josh Lawler. Lawler, a Glidden, Iowa native, is no stranger to the Series as he has played previous Stone Pier shows with band The Young Funk.

Maiden Dixie will entertain concertgoers on August 6 with their passion-filled country rock sound. The Minneapolis-based band was part of the 2015 schedule, but inclement weather prevented them from taking the Stone Pier stage. They released their critically acclaimed sophomore studio album “Unsafe & Sound” in April of last year and it spent two weeks on the iTunes New and Noteworthy Contemporary Country featured release list. After a successful tour to promote the album, the group returned to the studio and their latest release “Wrecked” takes their signature kinetic blend of country, pop and rock and turns up the heat.

The Series will conclude on September 4th with a powerful performance from Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal. The band’s combination of soul, funk and R&B is in a word, electric. Best displayed in their high-energy live show, the blend of Hoyer’s honest lyrics and his soulful (sometimes in-your-face) vocals merge with his top-notch band to create an undeniable chemistry.

Formed in Lincoln, Neb., the award-winning six-piece band includes some the area’s most revered and accomplished musicians. Inspired by Stax, Motown, New Orleans, Philly and San Francisco, the band continuously crosses musical boundaries both in style and era, and joins forces each show with a common goal – to have the crowd dancing so much they forget even their smallest troubles. Their third full-length album “Running From Love” was recorded at Nashville’s historic Sound Emporium and released in April of this year.

There is no admission charge or ticket required to attend the shows, thanks to the support of the Series’ many generous sponsors including Boulders Inn & Suites, Iowa State Bank, St. Anthony Regional Hospital, MoveIt.com and Stewart Memorial Community Hospital, McCrary Rost Clinic and Community Pharmacy. While concertgoers are allowed to bring food and beverages to the picnic-style performances, food is for sale at each show with 100% of proceeds going back to the event or charitable causes. The Lake View Fire Department operates the official “Burger Boat,” which delivers food to fans watching from Black Hawk Lake.
