Lake View Celebrates Ribbon Cutting for new Fish House on Black Hawk Lake

Lake View, Iowa celebrated a ribbon cutting for the new fish house on Black Hawk Lake on Tuesday, December 4, 2018. Located in Town Bay with access via the Ice House Point area of Black Hawk Lake, the new facility was completed this fall. Offering anglers year-round fishing with interior lighting and seating, the fish house is completely handicapped accessible.

The structure sits on a 40’ x 56’ platform which provides over 2,000 square feet of deck space. Outside has four benches and six locations where the railing is dropped down for wheelchair accessibility, while the inside features four benches, an opening in the deck that is 8’ x 20’, and two wheelchair accessible fishing locations. While the building is not heated or cooled, it does offer protection from sun, rain and wind. There are lights inside and outside that operate as needed during park hours; and a two-stall handicapped parking lot with a paved trail to the fishing pier.

A joint project between the Department of Natural Resources and City of Lake View, the $320,000 project was funded with donations from local residents, a grant from the American Fisheries Society Habitat, Sac County Sportsmans Club, Izaak Walton League and REAP Open Spaces. Amenities such as the benches were provided by donations from Tate Lahr’s Reel Fun Fishing Tournament and Cupcakes for a Cause. “This has been an exciting and unique project to work on”, noted Ben Wallace, Fisheries Biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, “The level of support that we received from the local community is another example of how we can get great projects done when we pool our resources. It makes me proud to work in this town and to be part of a bigger effort to keep this community thriving.”

The total cost of the project included fish habitat that was built all around the pier and underneath the deck to attract fish to the area. Agitators were also mounted to the deck during winter to bring up warmer water and keep the area from freezing. It is anticipated that this new fish house will be a highly utilized structure, and a welcomed addition to the many amenities located around Black Hawk Lake and in the City of Lake View.
